African-American Attorney John Wesley has practiced criminal law in Austin, Texas since 1977. During that time he has defended scores of young Black youth. He has sat in their jail cells and listened to their stories of despair and isolation in the crowded world. He understands the problem of Black youth in America better than some parents. “Brothers and sisters, African-Americans, my name is John Wesley. I am a lawyer who has practiced law for the past 25 years. I am an African-American. I live in Austin Texas, and I have a message for you.
“We Black people have a problem with America today. White America has turned on us. I have good news though. I know the answer to our problem. There is help Black people. Listen to what I say. We all know that we have a legitimate complaint against White America and something has to be done about the unjust treatment we are receiving today.
“We are being murdered by White America and nothing is being done about it. We say we are angry and that we want to do something about it. If we really want to do something about it and get America’s attention, if we really want to bring America to its knees for what America is doing to us, listen to me.
“Don’t pick up your guns. We tried that once before. We tried that in the 60s. It didn’t work then and it won’t work now. We are outnumbered and outgunned. Don’t commit suicide. That is not the answer to our problems.
“I have a better way for us to fight. We have the power to win despite the fact that we seem out numbered and out gunned. But first, we must understand where our power lies.
“The power to win is in the palm of our hands. Listen to me closely…”
